Christmas in Ottawa: 10 ways to celebrate the holiday traditions in our nation’s capital

No, we don’t have the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller center, nor do we have Mariah Carey unveiling The Bay’s annual Christmas window display, but by golly, Ottawa’s got some really great community rituals that should become official annual traditions.
I grew up in Toronto, so I am just now creating my Ottawa traditions with my family. Here are some of my faves!

You look forward to the reveal of Flower’s Talk Tivoli Christmas window display.

You start shopping at Tinseltown Christmas Emporium in Hintonburg because it is now acceptable.

You head over to your local farmer’s market to get your Christmas tree

You round up the gang and make boxes for the ShoeBox Project

You tune into Majic 100.3 on December 1 like clockwork for their all-day Christmas music

You take the family on a slow drive down Taffy Lane in Orleans because it’s warmer in the car and it’s free. You also wonder “who is paying the hydro bill?”

Bethany: Is your house on fire, Clark? Clark: No, Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights. 💡 . . Have you been to Taffy Lane in Orleans? It’s the best and cheapest way to get your Christmas light fix🎄Theses are some pretty committed citizens and we thank them for their duty! I saw a house hosting a food drive, so make sure you pay it forward 😇 This is part of our Christmas tradition in Ottawa… what’s yours? . . #myOttawa #ottawa #ottcity #igersOttawa #613 #yow #ottawalife #narcityOttawa #613style #ottawaphoto #yowstyle #ottawastyle #ottawafashion #ottawau #ottawablogger #ottawablog #ottnews #canadianblog #canadianblogger #canadianstyle #canadianfashionblogger #canadianfashionblog #canadianfashion #orleans #taffylane #christmaslightshow #ottawachristmas #thingstodoinottawa

You take the kids to see Santa at Billings Bridge. It’s tough competition out there, but he’s the best lookin’ one in town!

You take out your copy of “Santa’s coming to Ottawa” and keep it on your kids’ TOP READS list for bedtime stories

You hit up Lansdowne for their tree lighting ceremony and Christmas markets

You pack snacks in the car… “We’re going to Kanata to see the #Magicoflights at Wesley Clover Parks Campground!”

What’s your favourite thing to do in Ottawa at Christmas time?

Chantsy’s Gift Guide: White & rose gold wireless Sudio earphones

I hate to admit it, but Christmas is around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about what we want for Christmas! Get the paper pad and pen…mama’s writing her list! Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is not about gifts, and it shouldn’t be. But you and I can both agree, there is nothing worse than getting stuck with a whole bunch of stuff you don’t like and won’t use. Let’s call it waste, instead of greed.

Here is a great gift idea, if you want to impress the girl who has everything… because I know she doesn’t have this! For lovers of wearable technology and athleisure goddesses around the world, I recommend these gorgeous Vasa Bla Sudio white and rose gold earphones ($140).

These ear bud-style headphones are wireless and absolutely amazing! Did I mention that they are absolutely stunning too? Think of it as jewellery for your workout attire, exquisite!

Sudio, is based in Stockholm Sweden, and promises quality studio sound and up to 8 hours of wireless playtime. It also has a built in microphone and remote control. It’s compatible with iPhone 7 and all other Bluetooth enabled devices too. The ear buds come in a nice little leather carrying pouch, and the kit comes with interchangeable ear buds in different sizes. I changed my ear buds to 2 sizes smaller than the standard size. The buds are quite comfortable and stay in your ear. To recharge the headphones, you simply plug them into a USB port.

#WhenInAndaz: New Ottawa Hotel in Byward Market puts the spotlight on the capital

Ottawan’s have been anticipating the opening of Andaz Hotel for quite some time, and finally we can all rest, because it’s open… and you’re going to love it!

I was invited to the grand opening party a few weeks ago, and had the opportunity to savour and soak in all the Ottawa details nestled in this new boutique hotel located in the heart of the Byward Market. Between the gastro dining experience at Feast + Revel and Copper Spirits and Sights, the famous rooftop patio and trendy cocktail lounge, Andaz is no hospitality rookie and knows how to welcome it’s guests.

The evening was filled with experiential entertainment, like the yummy gummy Squish candy bar, hummingbird chocolate and wine tasting and, my favourite, the pickle smorgasbord at the Walter’s dress-your-own caesar bar. On a side note, the Andaz caesar is getting quite the reputation for it’s ketchup chips and seaweed rimer, which I am a huge fan of! We can thank Executive Chef, Stephen La Salle for all his magical creations!

This past weekend, I was lucky to celebrate my birthday and organized a dinner with friends at F+R. We then headed to the rooftop patio for some cocktails, got cozy in a booth and stayed warm by the fire pit. This was exactly how I wanted to spend my birthday. The weather was perfection and the company was even better! On a surprise note, I was even crowned with a gorgeous tiara from Ottawa Royal Style by Maria Al-Masani herself! I mean… that’s quite the birthday gift!

A few things you may not know about Andaz Ottawa

  1. The first rooftop patio bar in a hotel in Ottawa that is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!! Game changer here folks!
  2. The rooftop gives you an awesome view of the city
  3. The hotel only uses soap from Ottawa’s favourite natural product line company, Purple Urchin (p.s. I adore their soap bars!)
  4. Andaz is a boutique chain owned by the Hyatt
  5. Andaz Ottawa has 200 gorgeous guest rooms (although I have yet to see a room with my own eyes, but I hear they are spectacular)
  6. Andaz Ottawa has 4500 square feet of meeting and event space!

So, on your not-so-spare time, you can have a peak at some of the pictures from the Andaz opening event. These lovely photos were taken by Eric Vance, super talented (and handsome!) Ottawa photographer. These photos are protected by copyright and are not to be used without permission. Thanks!
