Every day, more than 800 women die from pregnancy or child-birth related complications in developing countries. In Canada, that number is closer to 10 per 100,000 births in one year. It’s not even comparable.

Although our healthcare system is not perfect, we need to step back and be grateful that we live in a country where we have access to clean hospital beds, state-of-the-art technology, competent healthcare workers and to top it all off, these health services are covered by our provincial insurance plan.

This Mother’s Day, ADRA Canada is asking Canadians to show their heart for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH). Please help me spread awareness and participate in the #Heart4MaternalHealth campaign by posting a picture of yourself on social media with your hands in the shape of a heart over your belly…. And don’t forget to use the hashtag!

The Heart for Maternal Health campaign was created to develop a better understanding of global MNCH in Canada and to drive active involvement of Canadians. Nearly all maternal and child deaths are preventable and by helping to improve MNCH, we can help save lives.
