Word of mouth: M.A.C. Select Lip Palette and Nutcracker Sweet Red Lip Gloss Kit

Have you been to MAC Cosmetics lately? They keep releasing gorgeous limited edition collections, and I got my hands on some pretty awesome goods.

I went to MAC a few weeks ago to replenish my boring essentials ( Select Cover-up NW20) and the lovely sales person was telling me all about their new Select rewards program. First, you get a good size sample with every purchase (I got the Prep + Prime Skin), and you all know how much I love freebies.

The MAC Select program comes in 3 levels: Seduced, Devoted and Obsessed. Each category comes with its own perks. After you spend a certain amount of money, you graduate to the next level. I wonder if they will release a “Rehab” level, you know, for folks like me who have spent every paycheque there since high school! Sadly, it does not include past purchases (I asked… haha).

One of the things that I love most about MAC is their “Back to MAC” recycling program. Bring 6 empties and get a free lipstick or eyeshadow. Now with the new Select program, you can bring your empties as you go, and they will record it in your file. No more holding on to garbage.. unless you’re doing an “Empties” vlog of course! I have to thank all my essentials for getting me hooked up in the lipstick department!

MAC Select Lip Palette x6 ($48)

Speaking of lipsticks, MAC sent over a few gorgeous products for me to try out and share the love with you. I received the Select Lip Palette (which is this month’s feature product under the Select program). It’s a perfect combination of 6 popular shades of lipstick in matte finishes:

  • Kinda Sexy : Neutral Pinky Rose (Matte)
  • All Fired Up : Bright fuschia matte (Retro Matte)
  • Lady Danger : Vivid bright coralred (Matte)
  • Candy Yum Yum : Neon pink (Matte)
  • Ruby Woo : Very matte vivid blue red (Retro Matte)
  • Flat Out Fabulous : Bright plum matte (Retro Matte)

I love the bright tones in this palette, and you can tell all the shades were thoughtfully selected. The 6-in-1 palette is perfect to pack away with you for the holidays or a vacation, and helps you pick the right colours, if you have a hard time deciding on what to bring. Because it runs a bit larger and requires a brush to apply, it isn’t something I would carry in my purse.

I always use any lipstick with Prep + Prime Lip, a base coat lip balm that helps keep the lipstick intact, and reduces feathering. I also typically use a lipliner when applying lipstick, but with a brush, I get the same precision.

Holiday Collection- Nutcracker Sweet Red Lip Gloss Mini Kit ($42)

Every year, MAC releases a holiday collection that make perfect gifts. I was given the Lip Gloss Mini Kit, a coordinated candy cane red kit of mini Cremesheen Glass and Dazzleglass in a stylish little box. These holiday kits are always a steal, which is why they don’t last very long (value $88). I love the brush kits that are released too, it’s great way to get your collection started, and at a crazy cheap price!

Think of this as a box of fat-free chocolates you can offer any girly girl as a gift, she will adore it and you! This kit includes a combination of 4 creamsheen glosses. Creamsheen gloss is a lip finish that fuses the creamy texture of a lipstick with the high shine of a gloss. It has a sweet vanilla scent and the classic honey-like texture MAC is known for. I love the combination of sparkle and red/pink tones in this kit.

  • Galaxy Rose: Midtone Violet Pink (Cremesheen)
  • Gumdrop: Intense cheery red (Cremesheen)
  • Courting Chic : Deep berry red w/gold sparkles (Cremesheen)
  • Phiff! : Sheer yellow peach (Dazzleglass)

I was playing around with the kit one evening and decided to paint my face with it! I used the Dazzlesheen on my cheeks as a highlighter and the Gumdrop pink/red on my lips.

Knock ’em Dead Makeup Looks for OWFF’s #HauteHalloweenOTT Red Carpet Welcome

Only if you live under a rock, would you not know that the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival is happening from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1, 2015. But timing this year is impeccable. Not only is the OWFF celebrating their 30th anniversary, but it falls on Halloween weekend. #Spooky

As most of my followers know, I was a makeup artist in my past life. I still dabble here and there, but in order to keep the passion alive, I try to limit my work. My only exception, of course, is Halloween! I love Halloween makeup and face painting. It’s the one time of year that I get to test my limits, use crazy colours and open up my creative channels that are blocked by the every day mundane.

The #HauteHalloweenOTT Red Carpet Welcome at the Ottawa Wine and Food Festival on Saturday, October 31 is the perfect opportunity to dress up with a little Halloween flare. Ghoulish and glamorous guests with ‘Arrive After 5 Haute Halloween Welcome’ tickets  are encouraged to dress in their most opulent, outrageous costumes and walk the red carpet. But please, dict the masks and weapons. Four celebrity guests will be judging between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and will choose one lucky winner. The prize? A $7500 trip for two to the Barbados Food, Wine and Rum Show!

Ok, so you’re going to the OWFF, but the age old question remains? What shall I wear to the affair? But what shall I wear?Worry not! I have a few looks to help you take your makeup look from Glam Night to Vamp Fright! If you’re not into the ghoulish scene, maybe you would rather a softer look of Woodland Creatures. The important thing is to have fun and be original!

Fall 2015 Favourites: Marsala, Gold and Camel

DESTACADOI was never much a fan of the colour burgundy. It was one of the colours in my high school uniform, that could explain it. But now, I love it! On my nails, on my lips… and in a bag. I need a Marsala bag. Maybe it’s because Marsala is the official 2015 colour of the year, according to Pantone. We truly saw it everywhere this summer; in wedding bouquets and bridesmaid dresses no less. It’s funny how something can grow on you, once you get used to it and see it enough times.
Bouquet-marsalaOn that note, I put together some of my favourite pieces for fall, including makeup, jewellery, accessories, shoes and bags! The colour pallet is mostly camel brown, gold, black and MARSALA! Have fun screen shopping!

The Secret to a Great Full Body Shot

Chantal Sarkisian Mode XLusive 2

When I did my photo shoot for my website pictures, my graphic designer insisted that I get a “Full Body Shot”. That’s when you get a picture taken from head-to-toe. Here I am thinking… “Oh great, the most unflattering pose ever. Sure, sign me up!”

Luckily, I had a really good photographer who obviously knew what she was doing, because in the end… I LOVED THEM! Maybe even more than my up-close shots!

So here, in short, are the key secret elements to a fantastically slimming Full Body Shot. I will start from the bottom up:Chantal Sarkisian Mode XLusive

  • Feet: Notice how in both my pictures, my feet are together and never side-by-side? Well, I guess that’s a huge part of creating that hour-glass illusion and slimming effect at the bottom of the picture.
  • Legs: Whether you cross your legs or keep them close, make it look like you have one leg. Weird, I know. Just do it. I think it helps give you a nice curve in the hips (which as an apple shape, I could use).
  • Hips and Waist: Always stand on an angle and face the camera with your “good side”. If you don’t know which is your good side, the professional photographer will and SHOULD tell you. The idea here is to create the illusion of a smaller waist line. Like you are capturing only 3/4 of your body.
  • Hands: Having your hands on your waist makes it look like you have a smaller waist line and shows it! That is what is important here. Because I am wearing a blazer, having my hand there really helps to define my waist.
  • Arms and Shoulders: My large arms and wide shoulders, which I personally think disfavours my figure, are sort of hidden in these pictures. Hiding one arm behind you again narrows your silhouette. The bend in the other arm and drop in the shoulder creates some movement and angles in the picture, to an otherwise very boring image.
  • Head: If it feels odd, you look great! Not sure what the formula is but it’s something like “Chin forward, head tilted to the side and down”. Again, you are not usually looking straight on into the lens, you are at a slight angle with hopes to focus on your better angle.
  • Face: I like smiling, it’s my security blanket for pictures. If I don’t smile, I have “mean face” going on… or sometimes they call it “resting b$@tc&” face. It’s not my fault, but I am sometimes told that I am intimidating at first because of it.

If I may digress for those who want more information on styling for a photoshoot…

Prepping for a photoshoot takes a long time but is worth the attention to detail. Here is what I did to prepare for the shoot:

  1. Clothing- I went for casual, business and fashionable. That’s me in a nutshell. I’m wearing a classic outfit that is flattering and comfortable.
  2. Makeup- Lots of it! Lots of contouring, highlights, fake lashes, bronzer, liner and bright lips! The camera robs you of makeup so make sure you have more than not enough. (PS- For those who don’t know, I am also a makeup artist. I highly encourage you to invest in makeup for your pictures).Chantal Sarkisian Mode XLusive 3
  3. Hair done- I had my hair done at my favourite trendy salon “Hair Republic” on Bank Street the day before. I simply refreshed my curls myself in the morning. Again, I highly recommend investing in your hair for something like this.
  4. Nails did- I got a manicure at “The Upkeep Shop” my favourite nail boutique on Preston Street. I was getting up-close pics done with my hands, so that was very important for me.

If you are doing professional photos for your business, don’t forget that this is part of your brand, your marketing and your image. It is worth the upfront investment. And the last thing I want to leave you with is….You should look like yourself in real life!!!! No powdery finished photoshop garbage mumbo jumbo. That’s all! haha
