Cost-per-wear: How good is your Fashion Math

Today’s lesson in math will show you how to justify expensive items to help you build your dream capsule wardrobe. Remember the essence of this exercise is to invest in classic, high quality items that will/should last you a long time. Again, we want to lean towards becoming stylish not trendy!

The Fashion Math
cost-per-wear-formula-total-cost-of-item-_number-of-times-worn
This is quite basic math. To help you find your Cost-Per-Wear, take the total price of your favourite item, and divide it by the number of times you will wear it. The ultimate goal here is to lower the CPW. The more times you wear your item, the higher the price can be! Take a really expensive  pair of jeans, for example. Jeans are worn so many times throughout the year, that you can easily rationalize spending between $200-$300 on a good quality, well fitted pair of denim jeans. If you end up wearing these jeans every day for a year, they will have paid for themselves! What a deal.

Sometimes we buy into the trends of fast fashion and get lured into purchasing lots of pieces that we don’t end up wearing, or we spend a ton of money on one not-so-key item. When you use the CPW as a common indicator, you can quickly see how you probably should not have purchased that $1000 ball gown, you will never wear again! (CPW= $1000… Consider Rent Frock Repeat, you crazy girl! What’s wrong with you?)

A few things to keep in mind when you are calculating CPW:

  • Durability- don’t sacrifice on the price! Invest in leather shoes and bags, they get the most wear and tear. I cringe when I see fake leather or plastic purses deteriorating.
  • Quality vs Quantity- buy nice things, just less of them.
  • Functionality- Do not compromise when it comes to functionality. Invest in warm, weatherproof boots and coats. Splurge on well-made and supportive heels that you will wear all the time.

Lastly, I want to close with the value of thrift shopping. This is an excellent way to splurge on things you don’t want to pay full price for. Maybe it’s a season too late, but who really cares! Paying less also means you can buy stuff that is outside your ideal “capsule wardrobe” collection. This is also when you can have a little fun and go outside your comfort zone.

Here are a few items that yield a low CPW… depending on your daily habits! What do you think of these price points? Sorry for all the black… it’s seems to be my go-to this season.

Holiday Gifts for the Girl who has Everything

On Friday I presented “Holiday  Gifts for the Girl who has Everything” on CTV Morning Live (Ottawa).
Basically, I put together my entire Christmas wish list and shared it on national television (Ha!).

Themes included:

  1. Luxury traveling
  2. Apres Ski
  3. Mademoiselle
  4. Edgy

I pulled everything from Fashion United, Ottawa’s premier fashion boutique! I love going there! They have an amazing selection of shoes, bags, clothes and accessories. They carry high-end brands like Marc Jacobs, Rebecca Minkoff, Kate Spade, Longchamp, Marccain and Michael Kors. This is quite rare in Ottawa, which is why this boutique really excites me.

Check out the segment and let me know what you think! I’m happy to give you any ideas. Don’t be shy and ask me your questions in the comments below!

Ottawa’s Newest & Not-So Common Concept Shop

IMG_8774

Last Thursday, I was invited to the media preview of The Common, Ottawa’s newest urban fashion stop at 380 Elgin Street. This modern take on city strip mall, finds a new way to gather multiple local shops into one common space: The Common, Le Petit SalonMorning Owl Coffeehouse and soon-to-be  eclectic eatery.

Nader Salib, owner of The Common Concept Shop, finally materialized his dream of owning a retail space in Ottawa.

I had the opportunity to speak with Nader and congratulate him on taking the risk and opening a clothing boutique, a dream we share in common (no pun intended there!). The Ottawa market is tricky, when it comes to high-end boutiques and private labels. Everyone wants them, but are they ready to support them? It’s lovely to browse, but at the end of the day, these shops need sales to survive!

I think Nader is on to something with this collaboration. I admire his out-of-box approach to turn a dream into his new reality. Partnering with other solid businesses, like my favourite coffee shop Morning Owl, should help to minimize the risk and amplify the impact! It offers a unique twist on convenience and cross-promotion of services. Come for a new outfit, and grab a coffee while you do it. It’s a new type of space that welcomes loitering and ultimately your business!

The collection at The Common is a mix of upscale street and urban fashion; a smart selection of threads and kicks for men and women. The space is simplistic and oh-so perfect!

This lovely gentleman prepared me the best cup of coffee I have ever had! It was prepared in an AeroPress, similar to a french press, but it uses pressure and a filter. This offers a full flavoured cup of joe with a smooth and rich texture. So. good. Here is a glimpse inside Le Petit Salon.

And now… pour la piece de resistance!

We had a sneak peak at the graffiti space, which is a work-in-progress and soon-to-be eatery. Rumour has it that this restaurant will be offering a combination of Caribbean and Mediterranean fare. That sounds perfect to me, and I can’t wait to try it!
