Ottawa Elite Club: A private dinner with Jessica Mulroney by Metro Ontario

A few weeks ago, I was invited to a top secret event, held at the Museum of Nature. All I knew was that Metro Ontario was sponsoring a dinner and Jessica Mulroney was the guest of honour. The event photographer, Katherine Holland was gracious enough to send her photos for me to share!

I was greeted with smiling faces and offered a glass of bubbly as soon as I got to the cocktail area in the cave at the museum. Right away, I knew I was in good hands. Then, I do a double take… Is that ~~Rachel Zane~~ Maghan Markle I see by the dinosaurs? It can’t be! It was 🙂

You all know that I am a huge fan of Rachel Zane’s corporate wear and have even made reference to her style in my post “What’s a Capsule Wardrobe and Why you Need One?“. Meghan was very sweet and patient with my embarrassing fan girl moment. I get so shot up with nerves that my instinct is to cry… Control yourself woman! I need to get better at meeting famous people if I am going to be in the biz (plant seed here). Luckily, I worked up the courage to introduce myself to Jessica at the end of the night and also managed to snap a quick picture!

Metro Ontario sponsored the elegant meal prepared by the chefs from the Westin Hotel. The dinner was lovely, and I am sad that I don’t remember now how everything tasted. I just remember that everything was decadent, delectable and delicious! I admire Metro’s commitment to supporting the community and look forward to seeing the impact of the changes brought on by their new corporate direction. Listen up people- Metro is reinventing themselves, and they are here to stay!

My life came #fullcircle today when I met @meghanmarkle in person at the @metroontario dinner! I’ve said it before in my #capsulewardrobe post that #RachelZane is my #corporatewear crush! I was so nervous when I approached her, I am not good at #fangirl moments. I get all shaky and have the urge to cry! Megan was very sweet and kind. We chatted about #Suits, about my curvy blog, and about her new @reitmans campaign and I even gave her my business card! Megan commented that my outfit was “very Rachel”. Winter Fashion Street Style Looks- Black and Grey

As promised, here is the second look from the winter fashion street style session that I did with Amy Symes last weekend. These photos were taken on Bank street near Catherine. my favourite wide brim hat from Lovely Bird, which I bought in Toronto at The Cloakroom
my black and white scarf is by Ottawa designer Krista Norris, purchased at Viens avec moi. Yes! like the Krista Norris Scarf that was gifted to the Obama girls by Sophie Gregoire and Justin Trudeau at their visit to the White House!
my camel leather gloves are H&M
my grey coat was a second hand find at The Clothes Secret
my black leather purse is Marc Jacobs from Fashion United
my black suede wedged WINTER boots are from La Canadienne. They are the leader in elegant and functional winter weather boots. They are also from Montreal and obviously a Canadian brand. I bought these boots about 4 years ago and they are still going strong! Great investment and worth every penny (albeit many of them).

I felt really feminine, chic and most importantly WARM, in this outfit. I got a lot of stares, which can only confirm that it looked as fabulous as I felt in it. Maybe a tad over dressed for a Sunday afternoon, but who really cares!

I just can’t even… Every time I look at these bright photos, I forget that it’s winter and that we have 50+ cm of snow piled up on the streets.

Amy Symes and I planned this impromptu winter fashion street style session last weekend, at a few different spots in Ottawa. Something I have been meaning to tick off the old “to-do” list. I was so happy to work with her. I have known Amy for just over a year and love her bright, beautiful and crisp photography style. She was a trooper to do this in the cold and managed to stay friends with me, despite her frozen fingers. I, on the other hand was warm! That’s right, my friends… no suffering here! That was the goal of this winter fashion shoot. Some practical styling tips for a true Canadian fashionista, unlike what exists online.

In this photo, I am wearing my favourite pompom tuque from Shepherds, my vintage fur coat and Tory Burch fur boots from The Clothes Secret, black leather gloves from Simons, my bright blue Marc Jacobs back pack from Fashion United, and black leggings from Amazon!

Ottawa’s Newest & Not-So Common Concept Shop

Last Thursday, I was invited to the media preview of The Common, Ottawa’s newest urban fashion stop at 380 Elgin Street. This modern take on city strip mall, finds a new way to gather multiple local shops into one common space: The Common, Le Petit Salon, Morning Owl Coffeehouse and soon-to-be eclectic eatery.

Ottawa The Common Concept shop 380 Elgin — Nader Salib, owner of The Common Concept Shop, finally materialized his dream of owning a retail space in Ottawa.

I had the opportunity to speak with Nader and congratulate him on taking the risk and opening a clothing boutique, a dream we share in common (no pun intended there!). The Ottawa market is tricky, when it comes to high-end boutiques and private labels. Everyone wants them, but are they ready to support them? It’s lovely to browse, but at the end of the day, these shops need sales to survive!

I think Nader is on to something with this collaboration. I admire his out-of-box approach to turn a dream into his new reality. Partnering with other solid businesses, like my favourite coffee shop Morning Owl, should help to minimize the risk and amplify the impact! It offers a unique twist on convenience and cross-promotion of services. Come for a new outfit, and grab a coffee while you do it. It’s a new type of space that welcomes loitering and ultimately your business!

The collection at The Common is a mix of upscale street and urban fashion; a smart selection of threads and kicks for men and women. The space is simplistic and oh-so perfect!

This lovely gentleman prepared me the best cup of coffee I have ever had! It was prepared in an AeroPress, similar to a french press, but it uses pressure and a filter. This offers a full flavoured cup of joe with a smooth and rich texture. So. good. Here is a glimpse inside Le Petit Salon.

And now… pour la piece de resistance!

We had a sneak peak at the graffiti space, which is a work-in-progress and soon-to-be eatery. Rumour has it that this restaurant will be offering a combination of Caribbean and Mediterranean fare. That sounds perfect to me, and I can’t wait to try it!
